Eutrophication of aquatic ecosystems: bistability and soil phosphorus.
نویسنده
چکیده
Eutrophication (the overenrichment of aquatic ecosystems with nutrients leading to algal blooms and anoxic events) is a persistent condition of surface waters and a widespread environmental problem. Some lakes have recovered after sources of nutrients were reduced. In others, recycling of phosphorus from sediments enriched by years of high nutrient inputs causes lakes to remain eutrophic even after external inputs of phosphorus are decreased. Slow flux of phosphorus from overfertilized soils may be even more important for maintaining eutrophication of lakes in agricultural regions. This type of eutrophication is not reversible unless there are substantial changes in soil management. Technologies for rapidly reducing phosphorus content of overenriched soils, or reducing erosion rates, are needed to improve water quality.

Nutrient Cycling, Modelling and Management from Field to Catchment Scale
The changes in land use caused by antropogenic interventions, has increased the global pool of nutrients (Nitrogen and Phosphorus) in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. This report analyzes the behavior of the main nutrient biogeochemical cycles and the consequences of its alterations. It is remarkable the enhancement of some inputs and outputs to terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and the inc...
متن کاملNonpoint Pollution of Surface Waters with Phosphorus and Nitrogen
Agriculture and urban activities are major sources of phosphorus and nitrogen to aquatic ecosystems. Atmospheric deposition further contributes as a source of N. These nonpoint inputs of nutrients are difficult to measure and regulate because they derive from activities dispersed over wide areas of land and are variable in time due to effects of weather. In aquatic ecosystems, these nutrients c...
متن کاملPhosphates from detergents and eutrophication of surface water ecosystem in India
Eutrophication, regarded as the most immediate environmental consequence of extensive phosphorus usage in contemporary societies, has received wide attention. If the current level of human-induced global environmental impacts continues, there is a chance of occurrence of nearly 2.4–2.7-fold increase in nitrogen and phosphorus driven eutrophication of terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystem...
متن کاملRationale for control of anthropogenic nitrogen and phosphorus to reduce eutrophication of inland waters.
Concentrations of phosphorus and nitrogen in surface waters are being regulated in the United States and European Union. Human activity has raised the concentrations of these nutrients, leading to eutrophication of inland waters, which causes nuisance growth of algae and other aquatic plants. Control of phosphorus often has had the highest priority because of its presumed leading role in limiti...
متن کاملEutrophication Thresholds -- Assessment, Mitigation and Resilience in Landscapes and Lakes
7. Project Summary: Eutrophication, a persistent environmental problem characterized by turbid water, toxic algae, fish kills, waterborne disease, and loss of aquatic ecosystem services, may be related to important thresholds in the phosphorus (P) cycle. We will address two main questions: (1) What thresholds in the transport and recycling of P in linked terrestrial-aquatic ecosystems cause lak...
